FLUORESCENCE FROM AN ASH TREE TWIG / FRAXIN

NEEDED

     -  Freshly cut chestnut or ash tree twig
     -  Water
     -  UV-light

PROCEDURE

         Freshly cut one end of the twig prior to the
     experiment and hold it in the water under
     UV-light. The bright blue fluorescent Aesculin
     or the bright greenish blue fluorescent Fraxin
     is flowing out into the water

COMMENTS

         UV-irradiating onto the freshly cut twig shows
     the layers within the twig, where the
     fluorescent compound reside.
         The fluorescence of the outflowing dyes is
     is really spectacular.
